What "Ruthless" Shows us About Not Being Cruel

The short story “Ruthless” by William DeMille starts when some guys rob Judson and take his alcohol. Judson gets really mad as a result of this. He then puts poison so they would die if they stole it and drank it. Then while getting ready to leave he slipped and fell and got knocked out. Some guy named Alan found him and took care of him and gave him the alcohol to give him energy. As a result of this Judson died of his own alcohol.

I think it was not okay for Judson to take justice into his own hands. I think this because he is not a cop and should have left the police to do this. Once at school, I got some food stolen from me. As a result of this, I did not tell a teacher and instead stole his food. After that, he snitched and we both got in trouble.

I think that it was both Judson’s fault and not his fault. I think it was his fault because he did not call the cops. I also think it was not his fault for trying to solve his own problem. Something unfair that happened to me was when I got a detention for not doing anything at all. I let it go because the vice principal does not care what I say to her and always gets mad if I breathe so accepting it. I think the thieves in Judson’s story should have just gotten arrested instead because it is just a bottle of whiskey, not like your life savings.

In the end, this story shows that if you want to solve a problem on your own you have to not do it in a cruel way.
